Residents of Maiduguri have expressed their dissatisfaction with both the Borno State Government and the Federal Government for their lackluster response to the ongoing flooding crisis in the city.
They specifically condemned the government’s failure to adequately support those affected by the disaster, as many have been left without shelter or basic necessities.
Amidst the rising floodwaters, which have caused millions of houses to collapse, the Nigerian Army, Navy, and Air Force have stepped in to provide crucial assistance to the beleaguered residents on Day 3.
Under the leadership of the Commanding Officer of the Nigerian Army, soldiers have been working tirelessly to evacuate residents from the worst-affected areas, transporting many to safer locations, including military barracks. In addition to offering shelter, the Army has also provided food items to the evacuees.
The Nigerian Navy has played a vital role in the evacuation efforts, utilizing their boats to rescue people stranded in flooded areas.
Meanwhile, the Nigerian Air Force has deployed helicopters to airlift residents trapped in difficult-to-reach locations, such as those under flyovers, where the floods have severely limited ground movement.
Despite the military’s commendable efforts, residents have been vocal about the government’s slow and insufficient response to the disaster.
They believe that more could have been done to prevent the widespread destruction and alleviate the suffering of those affected.
Many feel abandoned by the authorities, as the floods continue to wreak havoc across Maiduguri, leaving countless families homeless and desperate for help.
The situation has highlighted the gap in emergency preparedness and disaster response in the region, with the military stepping in where government agencies have fallen short.
