NCC To Tackle Mobile Fraud With New Regulations

—

In a bid to curb unchecked fraudulent activities, the Nigerian Communication Commission (NCC) has announced plans to introduce regulations criminalizing the use of mobile lines for fraud. According to the NCC, the absence of consequences for such activities has prompted this proactive measure. Expected later this year, the regulation aims to impose penalties on individuals engaged in fraudulent activities using mobile lines.
The Executive Vice Chairman expressed concern over the rising issue of fraud, particularly involving the recycling of mobile numbers. Emphasizing the importance of securing mobile numbers, the NCC called for banks to revalidate ownership linked to bank accounts. This move is seen as a crucial step in protecting the integrity of mobile numbers and raising awareness about the risks associated with number recycling.
The regulatory initiative seeks to fill the current void in consequences for those exploiting mobile numbers for fraudulent purposes. The NCC pledged to exercise its regulatory authority, ensuring licensees adhere to their obligations and agreements.
Compliance takes center stage in this initiative, with the Commission pushing for a maturity phase and robust enforcement of obligations and agreements within the mobile communication industry. The aim is to create a secure environment and deter individuals from engaging in fraudulent activities using mobile lines.
