CAFCC: Rivers United Knocked Out of the Continental Tournament

—

Rivers United has been eliminated from the CAF Confederation Cup in the quarter-final round after suffering a 2-0 defeat to USM Alger of Algeria at the Stade Omar Hammadi Stadium.

Despite a goal advantage in the first leg played at the Godwills Apkabio International, Stadium, Rivers was unable to progress beyond the quarterfinal round, after having an aggregate score of 2-1 in favour of USM Alger. Alger dominated the game with 63% of ball possession and 12 goal attempts, out of which 6 were on target. The Pride of Rivers managed to make only 6 attempts with just one on target.

USM Alger will now compete against Moroccan team Berkane in the semi-finals, while no Nigerian club remains in the tournament at this stage.

The defeat handed to Rivers by Alger means no Nigeria club remains in the Continental tournament at this stage. Since Enyimba last won the CAF Champions League in 2005, the NPFL teams have struggled to reign as the Champions on the African continent.
