Uber Kenya Announces Fare Increase

—

Uber Kenya has announced a fare increase across all ride categories, reflecting a rise in both the minimum fare and per-kilometre rates.
This move comes in response to ongoing frustrations among drivers, who have been demanding better compensation.
Following a five-day strike in July 2024, drivers had been setting their own higher rates and refusing to serve passengers unwilling to pay more.
The strike was driven by demands for improved pay and greater influence over pricing decisions.
The new minimum fare will be KSh 220 ($1.73), an increase from the previous rate of KSh 180 ($1.40).
Although this adjustment falls short of the KSh 300 ($2.33) that some drivers had hoped for, it represents a notable shift in pricing.
In response to the fare adjustment, Uber has urged customers to report any instances where drivers charge more than the fare calculated by the app.
The company has indicated that disciplinary actions for non-compliance could range from warnings to expulsion.
Union representatives have criticized the fare increase, arguing that it does not sufficiently address the high operational costs faced by drivers.
They had advocated for a base fare of KSh 300.
In an effort to alleviate the impact of the fare increase, Uber is partnering with auto industry players to provide subsidized maintenance services and is introducing rewards for drivers.
These measures aim to support drivers as they adjust to the new fare structure.
