Truecaller has introduced call recording and transcription features for its paid users in India, the company’s largest market.Â
This service is available on both Android and iOS platforms, supporting English and Hindi transcriptions for premium users.
In contrast to the U.S., where Truecaller introduced call recording for premium users in June 2023, India will not have the regulation-required beep sound during recording.
The Android app includes a dedicated recording button in its dialer, while users on other dialers will see a floating recording button.
On iOS, due to CallKit restrictions, users need to initiate a call, go to the Truecaller app, tap “Record a call,” call another recording line, and manually merge the calls for recording.
After a call, the app processes audio and notifies users when the transcription is ready. On iOS, recordings are stored locally with an option for iCloud storage.
Truecaller faced a revenue decline in Q4 2023, with a yearly revenue dip of 2%. However, monthly and daily active users in India grew by 11% and 12%, respectively.
To boost revenues, Truecaller is focusing on its premium plan, starting at ₹79 per month ($0.95), offering features like call recording.
While the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) recommended a caller ID service, CNAP, Truecaller does not consider it competitive.
The company aims to prioritize growing subscriber revenue, especially in the U.S., amid challenges in the Indian ad market.
