The Minister of Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman, said on Tuesday that the police will go after people with fake degree papers in the country.
He said this will happen after a special group checks into fake degree factories and shares their findings.
The Federal Ministry of Education earlier put together a team to look into these fake degree factories following a story published by Daily Nigerian.
The story showed how easy it was to get a fake degree from Benin Republic. The story’s writer, Umar Audu, got a degree in just six weeks and even did the National Youth Service Corps with it.
The report made the Nigerian government stop recognizing degrees from Benin Republic and Togo.
The team also has to check private universities set up in the last 15 years. They asked the public for information and even visited some schools in the Benin Republic.
Talking at a meeting in Abuja, Minister Mamman said, “Once the team gives us their report, we’ll catch people with fake degrees. The police will track them down.”
The Minister of State for Education, Dr. Tanko Sununu, also talked at the meeting. He said the meeting’s goal was to tell people about what the ministry does. He said they want to build trust with people and make things run better.
