Port Harcourt-based NPFL club Rivers United, through their X handle, has announced the sacking of Stanley Eguma.
“The Management of Rivers United FC officially announces the termination of Coach Stanley Eguma’s appointment as Technical Manager of the Club.”
Eguma, who holds the record as the longest-serving NPFL manager, guided the Pride of Rivers to their first-ever title in the 2021-22 season since its formation in 2016 from the merger of Sharks FC and Dolphins FC. He has consistently helped the team qualify for the CAF tournament since then.
The club further revealed that his assistant, Evans Ogenyi, has taken over the helm of affairs till the end of the season:
“Subsequently, Coach Evans Ogenyi, the club’s Chief Coach, has been appointed in an acting capacity as the head coach of the Club until the end of the 2023/2024 Nigeria Premier Football League season.”
Just a few minutes after announcing Eguma’s sacking, a reliable source conveyed to the News Chronicle that the players of the team have refused to participate in their regular training, embarking on a strike due to unpaid bonuses for 33 games, salaries, and the CAF Confederation match bonuses as well.
Rivers United, who crashed out of the CAF Confederation Cup before the semi-final round, earned over N560,000,000 for their voyage in the competition this season. This has led to many fans raising concerns about the arising issues in the club.
