In Zamfara state, a tragic incident unfolded as woman lost her life allegedly due to gunfire from Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) operatives in pursuit of suspected hoodlums.
The incident reportedly took place at an Eid ground, where amidst the chase, a stray bullet struck the victim.
The aftermath saw an enraged crowd setting ablaze a vehicle belonging to the NSCDC, protesting against the woman’s death.
Yazid Abubakar, the spokesperson for the Zamfara police command, confirmed the detention of two NSCDC personnel involved and assured that an investigation is underway. “We have two of them in our custody. The command is still investigating the incident,” Abubakar stated.
Contrarily, Ikor Oche, spokesperson of NSCDC in Zamfara, denied that their operatives shot the woman.
According to Oche, the NSCDC personnel were stationed to monitor the Eid ground’s surroundings when they heard a gunshot. Rushing to the scene, they found the woman fatally injured.
Oche explained, “Because they were the ones close to the scene, a mob descended on them.
They had to run for their safety and abandoned their Hilux vehicle.” He further stated that the vehicle was set ablaze by the mob, resulting in injuries to about seven NSCDC personnel.
Oche emphasized, “They did not shoot or kill anybody,” adding that an investigation has been initiated to ascertain the cause of the incident.
