North East Development Commission Revives Nightlife in Maiduguri with Solar-Powered Streetlights

The North East Development Commission (NEDC) has played a pivotal role in revitalizing the nightlife of Maiduguri, the capital of Borno State, by installing solar-powered streetlights across various key locations within the city.

The areas benefiting from these installations include Polo, Jiddari, Dikwa Lowcost, Mogolis, Old GRA, among other strategic locations In the State.

During an inspection tour conducted on Tuesday in Maiduguri and Jere, the NEDC Managing Director, Goni Alkali, provided insight into the significance of these solar-powered streetlights.

He emphasized that the primary objective of these projects is to bolster security and stimulate economic activities in the region.

Alkali highlighted the profound transformation that the city has undergone. Streets that were once shrouded in darkness and insecurity have now become vibrant and bustling centers of activity.

The newly installed streetlights have provided a sense of safety, allowing residents and business owners to make full use of the nighttime hours without fear.

This newfound sense of security has led to a surge in economic activities, as people are now more confident to move about and conduct business after dark.

Moreover, Alkali announced another significant initiative by the NEDC, which involves clearing one million meters of drainage systems across the six states of Borno, Yobe, Adamawa, Taraba, Bauchi, and Gombe.

This massive project not only aims to improve the health and sanitation of the communities but also provides employment opportunities for local residents.

The impact of these initiatives has been transformative for Maiduguri, a city that had long struggled with issues of darkness and insecurity.

Alkali expressed the commission’s commitment to continuing efforts that positively impact the lives of people in the North East region.

“Residents can now move freely and conduct business at night, which in turn boosts the local economy. We are determined to make a lasting and positive impact on the lives of the people in the North East,” Alkali stated.

These projects reflect the NEDC’s dedication to improving both the security and economic prospects of Maiduguri and the broader region.

Through these efforts, the commission is not only illuminating the streets but also lighting up the path toward a brighter future for the people of the North East.
