NDIC Assigns Accountants To Systems For Deposit Insurance

—

The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) has received a request from the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation (NDIC) to include courses on the Deposit Insurance System (DIS) in its curriculum.

During a courtesy visit to the Corporation’s management in Abuja, the Governing Council Members of ICAN, escorted by the Institute’s President, Innocent Iweka Okwuosa, received a call from Bello Hassan, Managing Director/Chief Executive of the Corporation.

Hassan justified the inclusion of DIS in the ICAN program by stating that doing so will improve professional accountants’ and the banking industry’s awareness of DIS.

He said it was essential to closing the information gap about the goals and accomplishments of DIS, as well as its vital role in safeguarding depositors and promoting the stability of the financial system. Furthermore, he said, it will clear up any misunderstandings regarding the advantages and restrictions of the deposit insurance scheme.

Hassan went on to emphasize the importance of raising public awareness in order to optimize the deposit insurance system’s influence and coverage across the board for both the general public and the financial industry.

He declared that cooperation with ICAN and other stakeholders had become essential to bolster the efficacy of the Corporation’s activities in order to adequately carry out its purpose, given the unique character of the scheme in Nigeria and throughout the world.

The helmsman of the NDIC congratulated Okwosa on becoming the 59th ICAN President. In all facets of their work, he urged him to make sure chartered accountants adhere to the Institute’s ideals of integrity and accuracy.

Additionally, he gave the Institute assurances about the Corporation’s steadfast support and collaboration in advancing the nation’s accounting profession.

Hassan also sent the Institute his sympathies on the recent loss of Akintola Williams, the first chartered accountant in Nigeria. Williams left behind a legacy of brilliance and professionalism that helped the profession in Nigeria flourish.

Hassan also praised ICAN for its dedication to upholding a zero-tolerance policy for professional misconduct, saying that this position will keep the Corporation and other stakeholders confident in their ability to rely on accountants’ work to accomplish their mandates.

In reply, Hassan received high marks from Okwosa for his excellent leadership and the professionalism he brought to the Corporation’s operations.

He pointed out that the Corporation has significantly contributed to maintaining the security and stability of the country’s financial system, which is essential to the expansion and well-being of the Nigerian economy, under Mr. Hassan’s direction.

The partnership between NDIC and ICAN has the potential to support the expansion and stability of Nigeria’s financial system while enhancing the knowledge base of accountants and other financial professionals.
