Mpox continues to spread across Nigeria, affecting 25 states and the Federal Capital Territory, with cases reported in 63 local government areas.Â
Recent data from the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention reveals 94 confirmed cases among 1,297 suspected cases from January 1 to October 6, 2024.
The latest situation report indicates a slight decrease in new confirmed cases, with six reported in the last week, down from ten in the previous week. Additionally, there were 47 new suspected cases, a reduction from 67 the week before.
Since September 2017, the country has seen a total of 5,114 suspected mpox cases, with 1,180 confirmed and 17 fatalities.
The majority of those affected are males, accounting for approximately 70% of the cases.
Currently, Ogun State leads in suspected cases, reporting 222, followed by Lagos with 153 and Bayelsa with 125.
The data also indicates age distribution among confirmed cases in 2024, with the highest occurrences among individuals aged 21-30.
The National Mpox multi-sectoral and multi-partner Emergency Operation Centre is actively coordinating the response to the outbreak, emphasizing the importance of monitoring and controlling the spread of the virus.
