Instagram Blames Moderation Issues on Human Reviewers

—

Instagram has faced a wave of account issues recently, including users losing access to their accounts and having posts removed.

Adam Mosseri, head of Instagram, attributed these challenges to human moderators rather than automated systems, contrary to expectations.
In a post on Threads, Mosseri revealed that the moderation errors were due to content reviewers making decisions without adequate context regarding user interactions.
He acknowledged that the platform’s tools malfunctioned, preventing moderators from receiving necessary information, leading to incorrect assessments.
While the company is working to address these issues and improve moderation accuracy, some users experienced more severe problems, such as being wrongly classified as underage, resulting in account deactivation.
Reports indicate that even after users submitted identification for age verification, some accounts remained disabled, raising questions about the moderation process.
Instagram has clarified that not all issues stemmed from human error.
The company is still investigating the tools that flagged users as underage and other ongoing problems.
Users have also reported a decrease in post visibility and engagement, which has led to frustration within the community.
As a response to the turmoil on Instagram and Threads, Bluesky, a competing social networking platform, capitalized on the situation by attracting users with its own features and updates.
Mosseri concluded by emphasizing the need for improvement in moderation practices and expressed gratitude for user feedback, indicating that the resolution of these issues may still be a work in progress.
