President Bola Tinubu’s term as the chairman of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government Ends on Sunday at the 65th Ordinary Session of the Authority held at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.
He is set to hand over the leadership to a new chairman.
Tinubu was unanimously chosen as chairman in July 2023 during the 63rd Ordinary Session in Bissau, Guinea-Bissau.
His tenure has been marked by several significant challenges, particularly the issue of military coups in member states such as Niger Republic, Burkina Faso, Mali, and Guinea.
Initially, Tinubu took a firm stance against these unconstitutional changes in government, overseeing the imposition of sanctions on the affected countries.
However, ECOWAS later decided to lift these sanctions, choosing instead to pursue a more peaceful approach to resolving the political crises.
Additionally, President Tinubu played a crucial role in the success of the 2024 Senegalese election.
His efforts in facilitating dialogue among stakeholders were instrumental in ensuring a smooth electoral process.
Throughout his tenure, he consistently demonstrated a strong commitment to promoting democracy within the sub-region.
As Tinubu’s chairmanship comes to an end, he leaves behind a legacy of firm yet adaptive leadership in the face of regional instability.
