Three people lost their lives, while another sustained injuries following the collapse of a mining pit in Bazakwoi village, situated within the Adnun community of Niger State.Â
The Director-General of the Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA), Alhaji Abdullahi Baba-Arah, officially confirmed this devastating news to journalists during a briefing held in Minna.
According to Alhaji Abdullahi Baba-Arah, the unfortunate incident occurred on a Thursday, 13 June 2024, involving local miners who were reportedly engaged in illegal mining activities.
While three individuals succumbed to the collapse, fortunately, one person was rescued alive, albeit with injuries.
Despite the severity of the collapse, authorities confirmed that there were no individuals trapped within the pit.
This incident comes merely a week after another mining pit collapse shook the Galkogo community in the Shiroro local government area of the state, claiming the lives of over 20 individuals.
Such incidents underscore the dangers associated with illegal mining activities and the pressing need for heightened safety measures within the mining sector.
