Super Falcons open their campaign in the ongoing AWCON with a defeat

—

The 11-time champions were defeated today by Banyana Banyana of South Africa during the first game of group C. The Falcons are down to the bottom of the table, with Botswana and Burundi yet to play their game tonight.

The game ended 0-0 during the first half and South Africa won the tie by 2-1 with all three goals coming in the second half of the game. Seoposewe and Magaia helped South Africa with a 2-0 lead through their 60 and 62 minutes strike. Rasheedat Ajibade helped the Falcons reduce the goal deficit by scoring at the added minute to make it 2-1.

Morocco, Tunisia, Senegal, and South Africa have recorded victories in both rounds since the AWCON kick-started.

The Banyanya surely came prepared with a stiffened and organized defence, which never let Asisat Oshoala and the Falcons get their way through.

They would not want to continue their terrible record against Nigeria. In the last 13 finals, South Africa has lost five, three of which are to Nigeria and two to Equatorial Guinea.

The Falcons now will look forward to a positive outcome when they play their next game against Botswana on Thursday to chase their 12th to stretch the record as the most successful team.
