Southeast Govs to interface with FG to Secure IPOB Leaders Release

The Southeast Governors Forum on Tuesday resolved to interface with the Federal Government to secure the release of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.

This was contained in a communique issued after the governors met in Enugu yesterday.

Kanu was arrested on June 2021, in Kenya and handed over to Nigeria and has remained in incarceration till date.

He had earlier in 2015, been arrested on treason charges in Lagos, and was detained for more than a year, despite various court orders that ruled for his release but was later granted bail in 2017.

Briefing newsmen on the outcome of yesterday’s meeting, the Chairman of the Southeast Governors Forum and Governor of Imo State, Hope Uzodinma, said the meeting reviewed the report of the South East Security and Economic Summit held in Owerri last year.

The governors, he said, agreed to implement the aspects of the report on security and economic integration and to also visit President Bola Tinubu to discuss pressing issues concerning the South East Region.

“The Forum commiserated with the Government and people of Abia State, Ebonyi State, Imo State, South East, Nigeria, and Chief Ogbonnaya Onu’s Family on the demise of His Excellency, Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu.

“We also received the delegation of the Former President Chief Olusegun Obasanjo GCFR, Chief Emeka Anyaoku, GCON, and His Royal Majesty Igwe Nnaemeka Achebe CFR, Obi of Onitsha who came on a solidarity visit to the Forum.

“The meeting resolved to visit Mr. President to discuss pressing issues concerning the South East Region.

“The Forum also resolved to interface with the Federal Government to secure the release of Mr. Nnamdi Kanu.

Among the governors in attendance were those of all the five states of the Southeast namely- Senator Hope Uzodinma of Imo State, Dr Alex Otti of Abia State, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo of Anambra, Rt. Hon. Francis Nwifuru of Ebonyi and Dr. Peter Mbah of Enugu State.
