Organizers of the planned nationwide #DaysOfRage and #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria protest have formally requested permission from the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, to use Eagle Square for their demonstration.
The protest is scheduled from August 1 to 10, 2024, with a possibility of extension.
In a letter signed by Damilare Adenola, Director of Mobilization for the Take It Back Movement (TIB) in Abuja, the protesters outlined their demands for unrestricted access to Eagle Square around the clock throughout the protest’s duration.
The letter emphasized that the protest might extend beyond ten days due to ongoing issues attributed to the ruling party.
The letter read, “As the Director of Mobilization for the Take It Back Movement (TIB), I am writing to request access to Eagle Square from August 1st to 10th, 2024, for our #DaysOfRage and #EndBadGovernance protest.
This request includes the use of this national asset day and night for the entire duration of this historic protest.
“Furthermore, please note that the protest may be prolonged beyond ten days as we confront the protracted crisis brought on by the ruling party.
Additionally, we ask that your office ensure the provision of a 24-hour power supply, toilet facilities, water, and security to accommodate the Nigerian citizens who will be camping at Eagle Square”.
“We also request that protesters be given the same courtesy afforded to both foreign and local dignitaries who have used the space previously. In addition, we ask for the temporary removal of the outer wire mesh barrier facing Aso Rock Villa, as protesters may decide to visit the Presidential Villa during the demonstration.”
“We sincerely hope that this request will be granted promptly.”
However, Minister Wike has advised residents of the FCT not to participate in protests on August 1, urging them instead to celebrate.
During a press briefing following the FCT Security Council meeting in Abuja on Thursday, Wike addressed the planned #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria protest.
He announced that August 1 had been reserved for the Chairmen of the six Area Councils of the FCT to present certificates of recognition to their traditional rulers. Consequently, Wike stated that the FCT would not be available for protests on that date.
