Palace vs. United: “We Have Huge Problems,” says Ten Hag

—

Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag has asserted that there are huge problems in the club following the 4-0 defeat they encountered last night against Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park.

Crystal Palace extended their unbeaten streak to the fifth game, having beaten Liverpool, West Ham, Newcastle, and then Manchester United.

Michael Olise’s brace and goals from Mateta Jean Philippe and Tyrick Mitchell truncated Manchester United’s hopes for European spots.

This is what Ten Hag said in his post-match interviews with Sky Sports, BBC Sport, and MUTV, plus his press conference:

All season, we have had huge problems, and by now, this is the fourth defeat in this calendar year, so that’s not a lot. Every time, we had huge problems, and many times, we sorted it out. Today, we didn’t.”

When asked about his future at the club, Ten Hag refused to engage in explicit discussion but insisted that they are focused on improving performance:

I don’t think about my future. I prepare the team in the best way I can. We have many problems. The only focus I have is to perform better with my team. I only think about making my team better.”

The Dutchman described the defeat as deserved, insisting that the available players should have performed better regardless of the absentees:

As Manchester United, we should perform better. The players who were available should do better. It’s a deserved defeat. The performance wasn’t what we expected. There are always reasons why we are not good enough. Everyone can see our backline; there we have huge problems. But at the end of the day, we have to deal with it. We should have done better than we did.”

Chelsea has now capitalized on this advantage to sit comfortably in seventh place, though on the same points as Manchester United, they are separated by goal difference.
