Opera Browser Introduces Integration of Large Language Models (LLMs) for Enhanced User Experience

—

Opera, a popular web browser, has unveiled a groundbreaking feature that allows users to directly download and utilize Large Language Models (LLMs) on their computers.
This innovation, initially available to Opera One users receiving developer stream updates, offers access to an extensive library of over 150 models from more than 50 families.
Notable models include Llama from Meta, Gemma from Google, and Vicuna.
The integration of LLMs is part of Opera’s AI Feature Drops Program, which aims to provide users with early access to advanced AI capabilities.
Powered by the Ollama open-source framework seamlessly integrated into the browser, this feature represents a significant leap forward in enhancing user interaction and productivity.
However, it’s essential to note that each LLM variant occupies substantial local storage space, exceeding 2GB. Consequently, users are advised to manage their storage accordingly to accommodate these models.
Looking ahead, Opera anticipates potential size reductions in future iterations as models become more specialized for specific tasks. Nonetheless, users concerned about storage conservation can explore alternative solutions such as Quora’s Poe and HuggingChat.
Opera’s venture into AI-powered features commenced last year with the introduction of the Aria assistant, which has since been extended to the iOS version of the browser.
