NURTW Leader Kokozaria Remanded in Custody for Alleged Assault on Nollywood Actor

A Lagos Chief Magistrate’s Court has ordered the remand of Ganiyu Oyedepo, also known as Kokozaria, a chieftain of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW).

He is accused of assaulting an actor, Alhaji Ade Adele, popularly known as Baba Lawori.

Oyedepo’s remand follows his arraignment on charges of conspiracy, assault causing harm, and behavior likely to cause public disorder.

Chief Magistrate B. Sonuga ordered Oyedepo’s remand after he pleaded not guilty to the charges, which were brought forward by officers of the Force Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department (FCIID).

The prosecutor, Morufu Animashaun, told the court that the incident happened on June 5, 2024, at Idimu, Lagos. According to the prosecution, Oyedepo and his associates attacked Adele, injuring him with a bottle.

The charges against Oyedepo include conspiracy, unlawful assault, and disturbing the peace. These acts are violations of sections 411, 173, and 168 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State.

Oyedepo, however, denied the accusations and pleaded not guilty. His lawyers applied for bail, arguing that the charges are bailable offenses.

After considering the arguments, Chief Magistrate Sonuga granted Oyedepo bail for N2 million with two sureties. The sureties must have a solid reputation, show proof of their livelihood, live within the court’s jurisdiction, and provide evidence of paying taxes for three years. Their addresses will also be verified.

The case was adjourned until October 29, 2024, for further hearing. Oyedepo will remain in custody until his bail conditions are met.
