In a bid to bolster early warning systems and improve climate resilience across Adamawa State, the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) is set to deepen its collaboration with Adamawa State University (ADSU), Mubi, through a series of strategic initiatives.
This renewed commitment was made clear during a courtesy visit by the Vice-Chancellor of ADSU, Professor Augustine Clement, to NiMet Headquarters in Abuja on Tuesday, July 29, 2025.
The Director General and Chief Executive Officer of NiMet, Professor Charles Anosike, who is also Nigeria’s Permanent Representative with the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), received the delegation and reaffirmed the agency’s readiness to support the university’s climate initiatives.
Highlighting the critical role of meteorological services in sustainable development, Professor Anosike emphasized the strategic importance of Adamawa State’s geographic location, particularly its agrarian communities and proximity to hydrological structures such as the Kiri Dam.
“The geographical positioning of Adamawa State University, within an agrarian corridor and near critical hydrological infrastructure, presents a strategic opportunity for collaboration in meteorological observation, climate research, downscaling of seasonal climate prediction, and capacity-building initiatives,” Anosike stated.
He revealed that NiMet would support the establishment of a functional weather station at the university and promote academic exchange programs and joint research that contribute to disaster risk reduction and sustainable agriculture.
Professor Anosike further noted that the collaboration will be formalized through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), outlining expectations for station maintenance, data generation, and transmission. He urged ADSU to actively involve surrounding communities to ensure that the benefits of the partnership are fully realized.
In his remarks, Professor Augustine Clement praised NiMet for its critical contributions to national development and its commitment to advancing environmental education and resilience. He affirmed that ADSU is ready to provide the institutional support needed to make the partnership successful.
“Our university is committed to working closely with NiMet to create lasting impact, not only for our academic community but also for the people of Adamawa State,” Clement said.
The planned collaboration is expected to enhance weather monitoring, improve seasonal forecasting accuracy, and empower local farmers and communities with the information needed to adapt to changing climatic conditions.
