Niger’s military reported a significant incident at Koutoukale prison, located near Niamey, on July 11.Â
Following a mutiny, a large number of inmates, including insurgent terrorists, managed to escape from the facility.
Koutoukale prison is known for housing militants who have long targeted Niger and its neighboring countries.
In response to the escape, the military swiftly mobilized forces and managed to recapture many of the escapees, although the exact number of those recaptured has not been disclosed.
Among the fleeing inmates, three were described by army officials as armed terrorists. These three were killed during the pursuit.
The military continues to search for the remaining escapees in the densely populated area around the Niger River.
The prison break has heightened security concerns, leading authorities to impose a curfew as efforts to apprehend the fugitives intensify.
Koutoukale prison is located in Niger’s Tillaberi region, near the volatile border shared with Mali and Burkina Faso.
This region has been a critical security concern due to frequent attacks by rebel groups affiliated with ISIL and al-Qaeda.
Adding to the country’s security challenges, Niger is currently governed by a military junta that seized power in a coup in July 2023, citing deteriorating security conditions as justification.
In a separate incident on July 13, the military reported that six soldiers were killed in a terrorist attack in the nearby Tahoua region. This highlights the ongoing and severe security threats facing the nation.
