NASA Names David Salvagnini as First Chief AI Officer

National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has announced the appointment of David Salvagnini as its inaugural chief artificial intelligence (AI) officer. 
Salvagnini’s appointment marks a significant step in NASA’s commitment to harnessing AI for both space exploration and Earth-based applications.

In his new capacity, Salvagnini will spearhead NASA’s initiatives in responsible AI utilization, ensuring that the agency leverages AI technologies ethically and effectively across its operations.
His responsibilities include driving AI innovation, overseeing the development and risk management of AI tools and platforms, and facilitating training initiatives to enhance AI proficiency within NASA.
Collaboration will be a cornerstone of Salvagnini’s role, as he works closely with government agencies, academic institutions, and industry partners to keep NASA at the forefront of AI technology.
Drawing on his extensive experience in technology leadership within the intelligence community and a distinguished 21-year career in the Air Force, Salvagnini is poised to lead NASA into a new era of AI-driven exploration and discovery.
