Kano Fire Service saves man from suicide attempt over N2 million debt

—

On Thursday, January 25, the Kano State Fire Service successfully intervened to rescue a 37-year-old man named Saifullah Rabiu, who was on the brink of taking his own life by hanging from a tree.

The dramatic incident unfolded after Rabiu, facing a daunting debt of N2 million incurred during the process of obtaining a foreign visa, left a poignant suicide note detailing his financial struggles.

Saminu Abdullahi, the spokesperson for the Kano State Fire Service, officially confirmed the incident through a released statement.

According to the statement, the emergency call reporting the distressing situation came in at approximately 10:07 am from the Ministry of Works and Housing, Kano State. The location specified was the State Road near Nasarawa Emir’s house.

Responding swiftly to the call, the fire service personnel, who were on standby duty, reached the scene at about 10:10 am.

Upon arrival, they discovered Saifullah Rabiu in a critical condition, attempting to carry out his desperate act of self-harm by hanging from a tree.

In the suicide note left by Rabiu, he candidly revealed the tremendous burden of the N2 million debt, expressing that he had already repaid around N500,000 of the borrowed sum.

He further shared that the challenges and the distress caused by the creditor had pushed him to contemplate suicide.

Saminu Abdullahi emphasized that the rescued individual, Saifullah Rabiu, has been handed over to the Divisional Crime Officer (D.C.O) Zaharaddini of the Farm Centre Police Division.

This step was taken to facilitate further investigations into the circumstances surrounding the incident and to ensure appropriate measures are taken to address the underlying issues.

The case serves as a poignant reminder of the significant impact financial pressures and debt can have on an individual’s mental health, prompting a community response to provide support and prevent tragic outcomes.
