JUST IN: Court Slams IGP, Lagos CP with N10m Fine for Rights Violation During #EndSARS Memorial

A Federal High Court in Lagos has ordered the Inspector-General of Police and the Lagos State Commissioner of Police to pay N10 million in damages for violating the rights of peaceful #EndSARS protesters.

Justice M. Kakaki, who delivered the ruling on Thursday, held that the protesters were unlawfully harassed during the fourth anniversary of the #EndSARS memorial procession.

The suit was filed by 23 applicants including Hassan Taiwo Soweto, Uadiale Kingsley, and others, with support from rights groups like the Education Rights Campaign (ERC), Take It Back Movement (TIB), and Campaign for the Defence of Human Rights (CDHR).

The judge ruled that while the police are empowered to maintain law and order, such powers must align with democratic values and the rule of law. He affirmed the applicants’ constitutional rights to peaceful assembly and association.
