Obi led the team to 19th place in the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) last season, securing only 38 points, averaging a point per game. After a few poor performances early in the season, Obi was sacked and replaced by former Akwa United coach Kennedy Boboye by the team’s board. However, he was reinstated by the State Governor just a few weeks later.
