The Borno Governor, Babagana Umara Zulum, welcomed the Executive Director of the World Food Programme (WFP) and her delegation during a courtesy visit to the Council Chamber in Borno State, on Sunday evening.
The visit marked a significant step in the ongoing collaboration between the Borno State Government and the WFP, aimed at addressing food security challenges in the region.
The Executive Director of the WFP began her remarks by expressing gratitude to Governor Zulum and the people of Borno for their warm reception.
She highlighted the importance of the partnership between the WFP and the state government, emphasizing that the collaboration on food assistance programs would have a positive impact on the region.
She further noted that the WFP was committed to supporting the state’s efforts in providing food to vulnerable populations, particularly in the aftermath of natural disasters.
Governor Zulum, in his response, expressed his deep appreciation for the presence of the WFP delegation in Borno, particularly during the difficult period when the state experienced devastating floods.
The governor acknowledged the severity of the floods, which destroyed many farmlands and displaced numerous residents.
He praised the WFP for its timely intervention, providing both food and non-food items to the affected communities.
Zulum also extended his gratitude to other non-governmental organizations that have been working alongside the WFP to support the people of Borno during these challenging times.
“The government and people of Borno State are eternally grateful to the World Food Programme and other partners for their continued support, especially in the wake of the recent floods,” Governor Zulum said. “Your assistance has been invaluable in alleviating the suffering of those affected.”
The highlight of the event came towards the end of the meeting, when the Borno State Government and the World Food Programme signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to formalize their partnership on food assistance in the state.
The MoU aims to strengthen efforts to provide food security, especially to those impacted by the floods and other crises.
The signing of the MoU marks a new phase in the relationship between Borno State and the WFP, as both parties committed to working together to improve the lives of the state’s residents through sustainable food programs.
Governor Zulum expressed optimism that the partnership would bring much-needed relief to the people of Borno, many of whom rely on agricultural activities for their livelihoods.
The event concluded with both parties reaffirming their commitment to continued cooperation in addressing the pressing food security issues facing the region.
