—

In a significant move to enhance food security, Prof. Garba Sharubutu, Executive Secretary of the Agricultural Research Council of Nigeria (ARCN), announced that the Federal Government has given the green light for the recruitment of 1,650 scientists. Speaking at a news conference in Abuja on Friday, Mr. Sharubutu emphasized that the focus would be on engaging plant breeders to develop diverse varieties of crops.

Highlighting the government’s commitment to addressing food security, Mr. Sharubutu stressed the importance of quick-maturing crops such as rice, yam, cassava, wheat, guinea corn, millet, and maize. He emphasized the need to diversify without neglecting cash crops. The recruited scientists have undergone training and will play a pivotal role in genetic improvement and research.
Acknowledging the administration’s dedication to food security, Mr. Sharubutu emphasized the development of resistant varieties of beans and maize against insect pests. The ARCN is actively working on various crop varieties to ensure Nigeria achieves self-sufficiency in food production. Additionally, the National Stored Products Research Institute in Ilorin has developed storage models for yam, cassava, and grains, further contributing to the nation’s agricultural advancements.
