England Schools to Implement Cellphone Ban During School Hours

—

In a bid to bolster discipline and curb disruptions, schools across England are set to enact a ban on cellphone usage during school hours.
The Department of Education has issued new guidance, urging consistent measures to address the prevalent use of mobile devices among students.
The move comes in response to mounting concerns over online bullying, distractions, and classroom disturbances.
Government officials emphasized the need for a unified approach to tackle the issue, citing statistics from Ofcom revealing that 97% of children have their own cellphone by age 12.
UNESCO and UK Education Secretary Gillian Keegan have thrown their weight behind the initiative, citing links between smartphone usage and academic decline, as well as well-being issues.
Keegan underscored the importance of maintaining a conducive learning environment and equipping teachers with tools to address behavior issues.
Technology Secretary Michelle Donelan underscored the government’s commitment to striking a balance between technological advancements and educational priorities.
Recent findings from the Department of Education indicate that 29% of secondary school students report unauthorized cellphone usage during lessons.
Schools will be provided with strategies to enforce the ban, including phone confiscation, secure storage, or outright prohibition on premises. Success stories from schools with similar bans show promising outcomes, with increased student focus and engagement.
England’s move aligns with global trends, with countries like France, Italy, and Portugal already implementing regulations on cellphone usage in educational settings.
Stakeholders expressed optimism about the potential benefits of the ban in fostering a conducive learning environment for students nationwide.
