The Heartland FC of Owerri football team bus was involved in a fatal accident late last night, resulting in the death of former coach Christian Obi and the severe injury of several players as they were on their way to Abakaliki for a pre-season game.
Obi led the team to 19th place in the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) last season, securing only 38 points, averaging a point per game. After a few poor performances early in the season, Obi was sacked and replaced by former Akwa United coach Kennedy Boboye by the team’s board. However, he was reinstated by the State Governor just a few weeks later.
Several Nigerian clubs have expressed their sympathy by sending condolence messages:
Enyimba wrote: “Enyimba FC is deeply saddened to hear about the accident involving Heartland FC of Owerri this evening along the Okigwe road, as they journeyed to Abakaliki. Our thoughts and prayers are with the entire Heartland FC family, particularly those affected by this incident.
