The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has taken decisive action regarding the abandoned 2024 AFCON qualifier between Libya and Nigeria, originally scheduled for October 15 in Benghazi.
As previously reported by The News Chronicle, the Super Eagles were stranded at the airport after the Libya Football Federation directed them to the wrong destination for their matchday 4 fixture.
In response to this incident, CAF swiftly issued the following sanctions against the Libyan Football Federation and its national team.
1. The Libya Football Federation has been found to have breached Article 31 of the Africa Cup of Nations Regulations, as well as Articles 82 and 151 of the CAF Disciplinary Code.
2. Match No. 87, Libya vs. Nigeria, of the CAF Africa Cup of Nations Qualifiers 2025 (scheduled to be played on 15 October in Benghazi) is declared forfeited by Libya, with a 3-0 victory awarded to Nigeria.
3. The Libya Football Federation is ordered to pay a fine of USD 50,000.
4. The fine is to be paid within 60 days of the notification of this decision.
5. All other motions or prayers for relief are dismissed.
Note: Nigeria remains top of Group D and needs just one win from their remaining games.
