Members of the Zamfara State House of Assembly have strongly condemned a rumored plan to negotiate with bandits in the state.
Their stance was expressed in a statement by the House Chief Press Secretary, Bello Kurya Madora on Friday.
The statement emphasized that efforts to seek peace and reconciliation with the bandits were deemed ineffective.
The lawmakers criticized those advocating for such negotiations, accusing them of pursuing political and self-serving interests.
The debate stemmed from a Notice of Public Importance presented by the Majority Whip, Honourable Rilwanu Marafa Nagambo, representing Anka.
Nagambo raised concerns about reports indicating individuals engaging in negotiations with bandits, purportedly for political gains.
He urged fellow lawmakers to bring this issue to the attention of the state and federal governments, as well as relevant security agencies, for immediate action.
During the session, other lawmakers condemned this behavior, labeling it as sabotage to Governor Dauda Lawal’s efforts to address insecurity in the state.
They pledged their support to the governor’s stance of rejecting negotiations with bandits who have disrupted normal life in Zamfara State.
The lawmakers also criticized those claiming to have been authorized by the federal government to negotiate with bandits, dismissing such assertions.
Speaker Rt Honourable Bi’yaminu Ismail Moriki announced the House’s unanimous resolution to condemn the purported plans by certain individuals to undermine the Zamfara State government’s efforts to tackle insecurity.
He reiterated the call for both state and federal governments, along with security agencies, to take swift action against these unpatriotic actors.
