WCQ: Nigeria Concedes Late to Share the Spoils Against Zimbabwe

The Super Eagles of Nigeria conceded late to share the spoils against Zimbabwe during matchday 5 of the FIFA World Cup qualifier at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium, Uyo.

A win would have helped Nigeria climb to second place after Lesotho held Rwanda to a full-time draw and Benin was beaten by South Africa.

The game, which remained goalless in the first half despite Nigeria’s numerous efforts, was heading for another frustrating draw until the 74th minute when Victor Osimhen scored to break the deadlock. Unfortunately, Nigeria conceded in the final minute, and the match ended 1-1 at full time.

Nigeria’s hopes of qualifying for the 2026 World Cup are not completely over. As things stand, only one point separates Nigeria from second-placed Rwanda and six points from Group C leaders South Africa.

Nigeria will face Rwanda at home on September 3, 2025, and then play away to South Africa on September 6, 2025, in matchdays 7 and 8, respectively.

If Nigeria wins these games, their chances of qualifying for the 2026 World Cup could be revived.
