Elon Musk’s fascination with the alphabet notwithstanding, Twitter’s X rebrand is far from being mere symbolism. The platform’s ambition is to evolve into an all-encompassing application that extends beyond the realm of micro-blogging. While the progress in this direction has been relatively limited, recent developments suggest a change is on the horizon.
Andrea Conway, a designer at X, has alluded to the possibility of an integrated voice call feature arriving on the platform. In a recent post, she revealed that she successfully engaged in a voice call on X.
Although X direct messages currently support voice messages, the addition of voice call support would mark a significant milestone. Currently, the sole means of conducting live conversations on the platform is through “Spaces,” a feature resembling Clubhouse’s social audio offering. However, the open nature of Spaces, where anyone can join or request to participate, renders it less suitable for private one-on-one discussions.
The potential introduction of the voice calling feature could potentially address this gap.
Enabling voice calls would not only enhance X’s functionality but also position it as a comprehensive social media platform akin to Facebook and Instagram. This strategic move might also create a greater distinction from competing platforms such as Threads and Bluesky.
Elon Musk had previously broached the topic of calling functionality in May. In a tweet, he had previewed, “Upcoming additions include voice and video chat via your handle, connecting you with people across the globe without divulging your phone number.”
