Nigerian music star Tems won the Dr. Bobby Jones “Best Gospel/Inspirational Award” at the 2024 BET Awards, beating out gospel veterans Kirk Franklin, CeCe Winans, and Maverick City. The ceremony took place on Sunday at the Peacock Theatre in Downtown Los Angeles.

Traditionally, this category has been dominated by gospel artists, but Tems’ win marks a change this year.

Her winning song, “Me & U,” while not fitting the typical gospel style, reflects Tems’ personal connection with God and her journey of personal growth. She explained that the song, written in 2021, was officially released on October 5, 2023.

At 29, Tems has already achieved significant success, previously winning BET awards for Best International Act and Best Collaboration in 2022 for her work on Wizkid’s “Essence.” Additionally, she won the Best Collaboration award in 2023 for her song “Wait for U,” co-written with Drake and Future, and received the same honor at the BET Hip Hop Awards in 2022.
