The House of Representatives has announced decision to withhold local government allocations for councils across the country that are not governed by democratically elected officials.
This resolution came in response to a motion presented by Hon. Ademorin Kuye, highlighting the urgent need to address the refusal of state governments to uphold democratic principles in local government and the financial mismanagement by unelected local government officials.
The House has mandated the Joint Committees on Finance, Revenue Mobilization, and Allocation (RMAFC) to withhold allocations for any local government council run by officials who were not democratically elected.
In addition to this measure, the House directed the RMAFC to create a special account to hold such funds until the respective state governments appoint democratically elected representatives.
Moreover, the lawmakers have instructed the office of the Attorney General of the Federation (oAuGF) to initiate legal action against any state that prematurely terminates the tenure of local government administrations.
The RMAFC has been directed to withhold allocations due to such local governments as well.
To ensure these directives are followed, the House has tasked its Committee on Legislative Compliance with overseeing and ensuring compliance with these measures.
The lawmakers also mandated the office of the Attorney General of the Federation (oAuGF) to institute legal action against any state that terminates the unexpired tenure of local government administration and direct RMFAC to withhold allocations due to such Local Government.
