Representatives to Meet Governors as Borno State Opposes State Police

The Borno State government has voiced its opposition to the creation of state police forces in Nigeria.
This information was shared by Nebeolisa Anako, the Secretary of the National Economic Council, on Sunday.
According to Anako, nearly all of the 36 state governors have submitted their reports on the matter, with most expressing support, except for Borno State.
In 2021, Governor Babagana Zulum of Borno State publicly stated that he did not believe Nigeria was ready for state police.
During a lecture at the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies in Kuru, Plateau State, he explained his concerns that decentralizing the police force could worsen the country’s security issues.
The idea of establishing state police has gained momentum as a potential solution to Nigeria’s widespread insecurity.
On February 15, following discussions with several governors, President Bola Tinubu endorsed the concept of state police.
A few days later, on February 20, a bill proposing an amendment to the 1999 Constitution to allow governors to appoint state commissioners of police passed its second reading in the House of Representatives.
