The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt.-Gen. Waidi Shaibu, on Tuesday inaugurated 80 housing units in Jos, Plateau State, as part of efforts to enhance the welfare of retired and serving Nigerian Army personnel.
The housing project, delivered under the Affordable Homes Ownership Options for All Soldiers initiative, was facilitated by Post Service Housing Development Ltd. (PHD).
Speaking at the inauguration, Shaibu said the estate comprises 45 newly constructed homes; 22 two-bedroom and 23 three-bedroom units—as well as 37 renovated houses, including 21 one-bedroom and 16 two-bedroom apartments upgraded to the standard of newly built structures.
He said the initiative reflects the Army’s commitment to ensuring that personnel who devoted their lives to defending the country enjoy security and dignity in retirement.
“Our goal is to ensure that the years of dedicated service rendered by these retired soldiers to our nation are rewarded with the security and dignity of home ownership,” the COAS said.
“Having devoted the best years of their lives to the defence of our beloved nation, they deserve a place they can proudly call home. This project is a practical demonstration of our commitment to the long-term welfare of our personnel and their families.”
Shaibu disclosed that 75 per cent of the housing units have been allocated to retired soldiers, while 25 per cent have been reserved for civilians to promote social integration.
He added that five per cent of the houses have been set aside for soldiers whose careers were cut short or who sustained permanent injuries while serving on the front lines.
The Army Chief commended retired personnel for their sacrifices in safeguarding the nation’s territorial integrity, stressing that they deserve continued support and appreciation.
He also expressed gratitude to President Bola Tinubu for his sustained support in improving the welfare of Nigerian Army personnel.
Earlier, the Chief Executive Officer of Post Service Housing Development Ltd., Maj.-Gen. Isaiah Allison (retd.), described the initiative as timely and impactful.
He disclosed that the company had previously delivered 60 housing units in Ibadan and 40 in Benin, while another 120 units in Abuja had been completed and would soon be occupied.
Allison said the one-bedroom apartments are priced at N7 million, two-bedroom units at N12 million, and three-bedroom houses at N16 million.
According to him, beneficiaries will acquire the homes through a mortgage repayment plan, noting that the prices represent about one-third of the actual construction cost.
