Oyo State Mourns Death of Renowned Yoruba Poet Olanrewaju Adepoju

Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde expressed his condolences and mourned the death of Veteran poet, music producer, and promoter of Yoruba culture Chief Olanrewaju Adepoju who recently died. 

The poet passed away at his residence in Ibadan, Oyo State, around 7 p.m. on Sunday due to a prolonged illness related to old age.

Though the exact age of Chief Adepoju is not officially stated, his family source mentioned that it cannot be quoted until they go through his records. However, it was noted that his contemporaries are aged 100 and above.

Chief Adepoju, known as a valiant ‘ewi exponent’ used his art to address societal issues and criticize military involvement in politics. He did not have a formal education and never experienced being in a classroom to learn.

Governor Makinde described Adepoju as one of Oyo’s esteemed ambassadors in the entertainment industry and emphasized that he represented the Pacesetter State for many decades.

The governor extended his sympathy to the immediate family of the deceased poet and the entire people of Ibadanland. He prayed to God for strength and fortitude for the family to bear the loss.

Governor Makinde also acknowledged the significant contributions of Pa Olanrewaju Adepoju as a social crusader who used poetry and music to address and rectify social issues.

Chief Olanrewaju Adepoju will be buried according to Islamic rites on Monday, 11 December 2023 at 4 p.m.
