In light of concerns about putting Steve Oronsaye’s report into action, Mohammed Idris, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, has explained the government’s position.
There’s worry that Tinubu’s directive to implement Oronsaye’s report could affect many workers in the abolished and combined agencies.
However, Idris reassured that the government doesn’t plan to lay off workers. He said the merging of certain agencies is aimed at making the civil service more efficient and cutting costs.
Speaking at a press briefing in Abuja, Idris talked about why the government wants to reorganize departments and agencies.
He said, “Looking at Steve Oronsaye’s report is about making the Civil service better. It doesn’t mean the government wants to fire workers.”
Idris highlighted how the government plans to cut costs. He said, “Just two days ago, the President agreed to a new way to reduce how much it costs to run the government by using Oronsaye’s Report – even though it’s been 12 years since the report was given to the last President, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan.”
He continued, “This shows the President’s strong commitment to spending wisely and leading responsible governance by looking at all the government’s commissions, agencies, and parastatals.”
Idris emphasized that the government thought carefully about its decisions on Oronsaye’s report.
He said, “Merging some agencies and getting rid of others wasn’t an easy choice. We thought hard about it to make sure important services stay good and people’s needs are met, while always thinking about what’s best for the nation.”
Talking about President Tinubu’s goals, he added, “By using Oronsaye’s Report, President Tinubu wants to save a lot of money by getting rid of overlapping jobs, making administrative tasks simpler, and using resources better.”
Idris said, “It’s important to see that these actions aren’t just happening on their own.
They’re part of a bigger plan to update and improve government institutions by using technology, encouraging new ideas, and making sure everyone does their job well and is accountable.”
