Nigerian Air Force Begins Specialized Training to Tackle Drone Threats in Maiduguri

The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has launched a new training program for personnel on the 612A Anti-UAV Radar System to boost its ability to detect and combat hostile drones.

The inauguration ceremony took place on Saturday July 26, 2025, at the Headquarters of the Air Component, Operation HADIN KAI (OPHK), in Maiduguri, Borno State.

The training is aimed at equipping selected NAF personnel with the skills needed to detect, track, and neutralize enemy drones, especially in conflict zones where such threats are becoming more common.

Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Hasan Bala Abubakar, said the program reflects the Air Force’s focus on mastering modern warfare technology. “This training is vital. You are expected to give your best and help improve our operational effectiveness,” he told the participants.

Air Commodore UU Idris, Commander of the OPHK Air Component, also described the training as timely, noting the rising use of improvised drones by armed groups in the region. “These drone threats have challenged traditional security measures. This program will improve our ability to respond effectively,” he said.

The initiative is part of NAF’s broader efforts to maintain air superiority and protect national security amid evolving securi

ty challenges.
