Nigeria in talks with India for potential import of fighter jets

—

Nigeria is currently engaged in discussions with India’s Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd to potentially buy Tejas fighter jets, as reported by Bloomberg citing C. B. Ananthakrishnan, the chairman of Hindustan Aeronautics.

The company is also in talks with Argentina, Egypt, and the Philippines for similar aircraft deals.

Hindustan Aeronautics, in its latest annual report, revealed plans to expand internationally by establishing offices.

It is actively collaborating with the Nigerian Army Aviation and Argentine Air Force, offering training to officers and supplying spare parts to boost exports.

Despite a surge in orders from the Indian Defence Force, only 1% of the fighter jet maker’s revenues come from exports.

Indian Prime Minister Modi aims to increase annual exports to $5 billion by the financial year ending March 2025.

Traditionally, Nigeria has procured military hardware from the United States, Russia, Brazil, Pakistan, and China, as noted in a 2021 report.

In January, then-President Buhari disclosed that Nigeria spent approximately $1 billion on weaponry to counter the Boko Haram terrorist group.

A portion of these funds went toward acquiring 12 Super Tucanos fighter jets from the United States, costing almost $500 million.

Since 2009, Nigeria has grappled with security challenges, starting with the Boko Haram insurgency in the North-east.

Recently, banditry and kidnapping have surged in the North-west and North-central regions, particularly in states like Kaduna, Niger, Katsina, and Zamfara. These areas have become epicenters of violence.

From 2017, separatist movements in the South-east have added to Nigeria’s security burdens, taking a violent turn.

In the month of August, a helicopter belonging to the Nigerian Airforce unfortunately experienced a crash in Niger state.

The helicopter was engaged in a mission with the noble objective of rescuing soldiers who were in the midst of a challenging situation, contending with bandits.

Tragically, the incident resulted in the helicopter meeting an untimely and unfortunate fate, prompting concerns and reflections on the inherent risks associated with such missions aimed at safeguarding the well-being of soldiers combating threats from banditry.
