Newcastle United today released a statement confirming Sandro Tonali is being investigated for betting. The former AC Milan player who joined Newcastle this summer was released by the Italian Football Federation in the just concluded International friendly games following his involvement in betting.
According to Sky, Sandro Tonali has admitted to betting on football and Milan matches that he both played in and didn’t. The Milan bets were reportedly on Milan to win and not on his performance on the pitch.
He’s likely to face a lengthy (but still lesser) ban for his help with the investigation.
“Newcastle United can confirm that Sandro Tonali is subject to investigation by the Italian Prosecutor’s Office and Italian Football Federation (FIGC) about illegal betting activity.
Sandro is fully engaging with the investigation and will continue to cooperate with all relevant authorities.
He and his family will continue to receive the club’s full support.
Due to this ongoing process, Sandro and Newcastle United are unable to offer further comment at this time.”
Tonali since joining Newcastle from AC Milan, has made 10 appearances for the Magpies. If found guilty, he could miss the 2024 Euros.
