Moroccan Tomato Export to Russia Drops

Moroccan tomato export to Russia dropped, but shot up in some other European countries. Last year, Morocco exported a total of 596.72 million kilos of tomatoes, 13.68% more than five years earlier, according to available data.

In this period, the country has lost a large part of the Russian tomato market, but it has significantly increased its exports to France, the United Kingdom, Spain, and the Netherlands.

France was the main destination for Moroccan tomatoes in 2020, with 359.35 million kilos, i.e. 6.15% more than the 338.51 million kilos it exported to this destination in 2016.

It was followed by the UK, which purchased 52.83 million kilos of Moroccan tomatoes in 2020, i.e. 32.01 million kilos and 153.75% more than in 2016.

Spain was the third-biggest destination for Moroccan tomatoes. In 2020 it imported 40.22 million kilos, i.e. 20.32 million kilos and 102.11% more than in 2016.

The Netherlands was the fourth-largest destination. In 2020 Morocco sold a total of 38.16 million kilos of tomatoes to the Dutch market, i.e. 31.49 million kilos and 472.11% more than in 2016.

Morocco’s four most important clients have increased their purchases in the last five years. Meanwhile, exports to their fifth-largest destination, Russia, have fallen. In 2016 Morocco exported 110.2 million kilos of tomato to Russia.

In 2020 these sales fell to 35.72 million kilos, i.e. 74.48 million kilos and 67.59% less than in 2016.
