Jail Break: Federal Government Vows to Relocate Correctional Facilities

Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, made a significant announcement regarding the Federal Government’s plans to relocate several correctional facilities.
The aim behind this decision is to address pressing issues related to space, security, and infrastructure within these institutions.
During his visit to the Suleja Medium Security Custodial Centre, Tunji-Ojo underscored the urgent need to move these facilities to more suitable locations.
This imperative action follows a recent unfortunate incident wherein 119 inmates managed to escape due to a rainstorm that caused severe damage to the prison.
Highlighting the critical problem of overcrowding, the minister pointed out that the Suleja facility, initially designed to accommodate 250 inmates, was currently housing a staggering 499 individuals.
Such overcrowding not only poses significant security risks but also undermines the well-being and rehabilitation efforts within these facilities.
Emphasizing the necessity of relocating correctional centers away from urban areas, Tunji-Ojo stressed the importance of providing adequate space, security, and infrastructure to ensure the effective functioning of these institutions.
By moving them to more suitable environments, the government aims to address the challenges posed by overcrowding and improve the overall conditions for both inmates and staff.
In a statement issued by the Ministry’s Director of Press and Public Relations, Mr. Ozoya Imohimi, Tunji-Ojo reassured the public that concrete efforts are underway to overhaul the correctional system and prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.
Acknowledging the crucial role of better communication and proactive measures, the minister reaffirmed his unwavering commitment to accountability and the safety and security of correctional facilities nationwide.
He pledged to take decisive action to rectify the situation, recover the escaped inmates, and implement robust measures to prevent such occurrences in the future.
