For every bad reason, Luis Suarez is making headlines. In Major League Soccer, the Inter Miami striker has gotten an additional three-match suspension after spitting on a Seattle Sounders crew member.
This new penalty arises from a six-game suspension handed down by the Leagues Cup Disciplinary Committee, only relevant to the next editions of that tournament.
Following the tournament, Miami’s 30-loss to Seattle in the Leagues Cup final on August 31 followed. Players and referees had a fight; Suarez dragged Sounders midfielder Obed Vargas before spitting on Seattle’s security director, Gene Ramirez. Suarez will thus miss the following three MLS matches against Seattle Sounders, DC United, and Charlotte FC.
The News Chronicle gathered that this most recent controversy has once again fueled discussion over Suarez’s extended history of violent and unruly outbursts. From his infamous racial assault incident in England to his many scathing interviews, Suarez has often allowed his rage to overpower his astounding football skills. Critics claim that his inability to handle his emotions damages his reputation, even if his technical skill is evident.
On Instagram, Suarez apologized and confessed he lost control in a fit of terrible fury and tension. He made it clear that he did not wish to introduce this as a role model to his family or his club. Still, apologies have become a regular refrain throughout his professional life.
Suarez has courted controversy; this is far from the first occurrence. Eight games for racial abuse at Liverpool cost Patrice Evra a 2011 ban. He bit Branislav Ivanović in a Premier League game, an act very condemned. After the 2014 World Cup, he was still another lengthy worldwide ban for biting Giorgio Chiellini of Italy. Even earlier, he was banned at Ajax for biting Otman Bakkal of PSV Eindhoven.
Suarez’s most recent actions at 38 show old patterns that are difficult to break. Though Inter Miami fans will miss his presence on the pitch, his football ability has once more been eclipsed by the unending pattern of violence and misbehavior.
