Kwara State Police Commissioner Summons Hunger Protest Leaders for Security Talks

—

The Kwara State Commissioner of Police, Victor Olaiya, has called upon the leaders of the ongoing nationwide hunger protests, which are scheduled to take place from August 1-10, 2024, for a strategic meeting in the state.

In an official statement released by the spokesperson of the state police command, DSP Ejire Adeyemi Toun, on Friday Evening, from Ilorin, the police emphasized the importance of adhering to designated protest locations and cautioned against unauthorized gatherings.

The statement highlighted that all protests must be confined to the court-approved Metropolitan Square on Asa-Dam Road in Ilorin, and explicitly warned against using the Post Office area for such activities.

According to the Statement “The Kwara State Police Command wishes to inform the public about the ongoing protest. It is evident that the protests in states like Niger, Borno, Kano, and Yobe have been hijacked, resulting in loss of lives and properties. Citizens wishing to exercise their franchise must comply with the recent court ruling in the state”.

“We urge all groups to follow the court ruling, which stipulates that protests must take place at the Metropolitan Square along Asa-Dam Road. The Post Office is not an approved location for such gatherings. “

“We also request that protest leaders meet with the Commissioner of Police to strategize on security measures and ensure the safety of all participants.”

The police stressed the importance of this meeting to devise effective security plans to protect both the protesters and the general public.

The directive aims to prevent the unfortunate incidents of violence and property damage witnessed in other states.

By complying with the court’s ruling and coordinating with the police, the protesters can ensure their demonstration remains peaceful and orderly.
