US officials confirmed to CBS News that Israel conducted a missile strike on Iran in the early hours of Friday, although Iran downplayed the significance of the strike.

While US sources mentioned a missile being involved in the attack, Iran stated that small drones were used. Iranian officials and media confirmed an attempted strike but downplayed its significance. They reported explosions near an army base and activated air defense systems but stated there were no casualties.

Iranian state media and officials claimed that there was no damage to nuclear sites or significant infrastructure. The International Atomic Energy Agency confirmed there was no damage to Iran’s nuclear facilities.

The strike occurred amid escalating tensions between Iran and Israel, including an Israeli attack on an Iranian compound in Syria and an unprecedented assault by Iran against Israel.

Isfahan province, a significant military infrastructure region in Iran, was targeted. It houses military bases, missile production complexes, and nuclear facilities.

Israel faced pressure not to escalate tensions further, given the risk of turning the conflict into a confrontation. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu faced competing pressures regarding how to respond to the situation.

Responses to the strike varied, with calls for restraint and avoidance of significant escalation from the UK government and the European Commission President.
