A recent study conducted by TRG Datacenters found that Instagram clinched the title of the most deleted social media app worldwide in 2023.

This research uncovered that a staggering number of users globally expressed a desire to delete their Instagram accounts compared to other social platforms.

The research examined the habits of the approximately 4.8 billion social media users worldwide, who typically engage with an average of 6.7 different networks each month, spending around 2 hours and 24 minutes daily on these platforms.

Despite social media becoming an integral part of daily life, users’ preferences for specific apps change rapidly.

In the quest to stay relevant, companies like Meta, which owns Instagram and Facebook, continuously introduce new features like ‘Threads’, akin to Mark Zuckerberg’s version of X/Twitter.

However, these efforts sometimes fall short. For instance, ‘Threads’ gained 100 million users in just five days but experienced an 80% drop in daily active users by August.

TRG Datacenters’ analysis delved into popular social networks, identifying the frequency of searches for ‘how to delete (my) account’ on these platforms over the past year.

The findings ranked Instagram at the top, with over 1 million monthly searches worldwide, followed by Snapchat, Twitter, Telegram, and others.

Despite Instagram’s 2 billion global users, the continuous trend of a million monthly deletion searches could potentially alter the app’s landscape significantly within a year.

Factors like an increase in advertisements and influencers leveraging the platform for sponsored content might be steering users away.

Snapchat, popular among Gen Z users, experienced around 130,000 monthly deletion searches. However, it remains the go-to platform for young adults aged 18-24, constituting over a third of its user base.

In contrast, WeChat, owned by Chinese tech giant Tencent and available in numerous countries, saw the least number of monthly deletion searches, indicating a stable user base.
