A python that escaped from the residence of former Accountant General of the Federation, Ahmed Idris, has been recovered and evacuated, along with a crocodile and a lion cub, to the Kano Zoological Garden, following public panic across several communities in Kano State.
Sadik Kura Muhammad, Managing Director of the Kano Zoo, confirmed the recovery and evacuation.
The python reportedly escaped from Idris’ private residence located in the Daneji area of Kano, triggering fear and tension among residents in nearby communities including Mandawari, Kabara, and Soron Dinki. Locals reported sleepless nights and fear for their safety until the animal was captured.
Ahmed Idris, former Accountant General of the Federation under ex-President Muhammadu Buhari, owned the animals.
According to Kano zoo officials, the python, crocodile and lion cub which were in Idris’ custody and have now been relocated to the Kano Zoo. The evacuation took place at night for safety reasons.
According to the zoo MD, Ahmed Idris held a valid license under Nigeria’s Wild Animal Law, which allows private citizens to keep certain wild species.
The law permits both endangered and non-endangered animals under strict conditions, such as proper habitat and safety measures.
However, endangered animals like parrots and vultures must not be kept for amusement and are only allowed in licensed conservation facilities like zoos. The license must also be renewed annually, and animals that reach a certain size or threat level must be surrendered to authorities.
“I visited the residence and confirmed the animals had not reached a dangerous stage,” said Muhammad, “but due to concerns raised by neighbours, the former AGF decided to surrender all the animals.”
Residents described the incident as disturbing.
Aminu Balarabe, a neighbour, told reporters: “We were sleeping with one eye open due to fear. Even if it’s still a cub, no one jokes with safety.”
Hayatuddeen Muhammad said the presence of such animals in a residential area was irresponsible, despite Idris’ reputation as a helpful neighbour.
The Kano State Police Command has opened an investigation. Authorities are reviewing compliance with wildlife regulations, potential safety breaches, and the conditions under which the license was granted and maintained.
Ahmed Idris previously made national headlines in 2022, when he was arrested by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for allegedly diverting over ₦109 billion in public funds.
